HR Path acquires Payroll Experts Australia in ANZ payroll expansion

HR Path has acquired Brisbane-based Payroll Experts Australia, expanding its payroll compliance, remediation, workforce management and HR systems capabilities across Australia and New Zealand, according to Pulse 2.0. Payroll Experts Australia will continue operating under the name “Payroll Experts Australia, an HR Path Company”, with its existing leadership team and employees remaining in their roles.

The acquisition brings together HR Path’s global HR consulting and HRIS services with Payroll Experts Australia’s vendor-independent payroll expertise. François Boulet, Co-Founding Partner at HR Path, said the acquisition “supports our ambition to be the global reference in HR transformation”, while Steve Keenaghan, Chief Executive Officer at Payroll Experts Australia, said the move “opens up exciting opportunities for our team and our clients”.

What Payroll Experts Australia brings to the deal

Payroll Experts Australia was founded in 2009 and has completed more than 530 projects for over 260 organisations across Australia and New Zealand. Its stated capabilities include payroll compliance and audits, remediation projects, interpretation of awards and employment agreements, payroll processing, advisory services and end-to-end systems implementation.

The firm operates independently of software vendors, which matters in a market where payroll platforms often bundle consulting with product sales. That independence is a distinguishing feature for employers running multi-vendor environments or evaluating systems without wanting a predetermined answer.

HR Path said the acquisition strengthens its ability to provide comprehensive HR transformation services in Australia and New Zealand. The combined organisation will support customers across strategic HR advisory, technology implementation, payroll compliance, workforce management and ongoing operational support.

Why Australian payroll compliance expertise is the anchor

Australian payroll is unusually complex by global standards. Employers must navigate the Fair Work Act, modern awards, enterprise agreements, superannuation guarantee obligations, single touch payroll reporting to the Australian Taxation Office, and state-based payroll tax and workers compensation rules. Payroll errors can trigger underpayment claims, Fair Work Ombudsman investigations and reputational damage.

Payroll remediation has been a growth area in Australia following high-profile underpayment cases across retail, hospitality, banking and universities. Payroll Experts Australia’s remediation project experience positions the combined entity to serve employers that need to identify historical underpayments, calculate back payments including superannuation and interest, and correct systems and processes to prevent recurrence.

For HR and payroll leaders, the practical implication is that a single provider can now span payroll compliance audits, award interpretation and remediation alongside HRIS implementation and ongoing support. That is a meaningful shift from engaging separate boutique payroll consultancies and global systems integrators.

How the acquisition fits HR Path’s ANZ trajectory

HR Path entered Australia in 2019 through its acquisition of DDG and opened an Australian office in 2024. The company also acquired RKM Consulting in 2025. The Payroll Experts Australia acquisition is therefore not an isolated move but part of a multi-year build-out of local capability.

The stated strategy is to combine local regulatory and operational expertise with global HR technology and transformation capabilities. HR Path cited SAP SuccessFactors as an existing strength, and Payroll Experts Australia’s payroll and compliance expertise is intended to complement that technology base.

For customers of Payroll Experts Australia, the immediate change is access to HR Path’s international resources and broader consulting organisation. The existing leadership team and employees remain in place, which suggests continuity for current engagements and client relationships.

What this means for HR and payroll teams

For Australian employers evaluating HR and payroll systems, the acquisition changes the provider landscape in practical ways. Organisations can now consider a single provider for payroll compliance audits, award interpretation, remediation, HRIS implementation and ongoing operational support. That may reduce the coordination burden of managing multiple consultancies.

However, employers should still confirm the specific expertise of any provider for their industry and instrument mix. Modern award coverage varies significantly across sectors, and enterprise agreements add another layer of interpretation. A provider’s general payroll compliance capability does not automatically translate to deep knowledge of a particular award or agreement.

The vendor-independent positioning of Payroll Experts Australia is also worth watching. HR Path has its own technology partnerships and implementation practice, so prospective clients should ask how independence is maintained when systems selection advice could lead to implementation work within the same organisation.

Questions to ask before engaging a combined provider

Payroll and HR leaders considering the combined entity should ask direct questions about team composition, local regulatory knowledge and independence. The table below sets out practical checks.

Area to verify What to ask Why it matters
Award and agreement expertise Which awards and enterprise agreements has the team interpreted recently? Award coverage varies by industry and errors are costly
Remediation methodology How are historical underpayments calculated and documented? Fair Work Ombudsman scrutiny requires defensible calculations
Systems independence How is vendor-neutral advice maintained when implementation services exist in-house? Avoids conflicts of interest in platform selection
Continuity of staff Which named consultants will work on the engagement? Acquisitions can shift personnel despite retention statements

The acquisition does not change Australian payroll obligations themselves. Employers remain responsible for compliance with the Fair Work Act, superannuation guarantee, single touch payroll and state payroll tax rules. Engaging a consultancy does not transfer that responsibility.
