Mahindra & Mahindra has taken possession of 800 acres in the Additional Butibori industrial area near Nagpur for a new automobile and tractor manufacturing hub, according to ETHRWorld. MIDC handed over the land on Monday, completing the transfer within six months of an MoU signed at Advantage Vidarbha 2026.
The company has paid MIDC more than ₹706 crore for the first parcel and has been allocated 1,500 acres in total, with the remaining 700 acres expected later. Production is scheduled to begin in 2028. Once fully operational, the integrated facility will have an annual capacity of over five lakh vehicles and one lakh tractors. The project carries an investment commitment of more than ₹15,000 crore and is expected to generate more than 20,000 direct jobs.
What the plant will actually produce
The Nagpur facility is not a single-purpose factory. Mahindra’s plans describe an integrated manufacturing hub with two production lines. The automotive unit will support multiple powertrains, including internal combustion engines and electric vehicles, as well as next-generation vehicle platforms. The tractor unit will cater to domestic demand and export markets.
This dual mandate points to a broader skills mix than a conventional assembly plant. The facility will need production technicians for vehicle assembly, specialists in EV powertrain components, quality control staff for both automotive and tractor lines, and supply chain coordinators managing inbound parts from a separate 150-acre supplier park in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Mahindra has also announced plans for a skilling centre in Nagpur, suggesting the company expects to train a significant portion of its workforce locally rather than relying entirely on experienced hires from other plants.
The 20,000 jobs figure: what is confirmed and what is not
ETHRWorld reports the expected direct employment figure as more than 20,000 jobs. The word “direct” is important. It means the figure does not include indirect employment generated by the supplier park, logistics providers, canteen and facility management contractors, or construction workers who will build the plant between now and 2028. The actual economic footprint in the Nagpur region will be larger than 20,000, but the confirmed figure refers to direct employment at the Mahindra facility itself.
No official breakdown of job types has been published. The source material does not specify how many roles will be production technicians, engineers, administrative staff, or apprentices. It also does not state when recruitment will begin. The 2028 production target suggests hiring will ramp up in phases, with the first significant intake likely occurring 12 to 24 months before production starts, but no official timeline has been announced.
Kapil Chandrayan, chief executive officer of Association for Industrial Development, said the land transfer “marked a major step towards creating a favourable environment for industrial investment in Vidarbha” and that the project “is expected to give a major boost to the region’s industrial growth and employment generation.”

How to approach hiring for the Nagpur plant
As of now, the Mahindra careers portal does not list Nagpur-specific openings. The official jobs site, jobs.mahindracareers.com, allows candidates to search by keyword and location or join a Talent Community to be contacted about relevant openings. That is the most reliable route for job seekers who want to be considered for Nagpur roles before they are formally advertised.
Mahindra’s careers portal also carries a fraud warning directly relevant to a project of this scale. The company states it does not solicit refundable security deposits, registration fees, or interview fees from job applicants. Any communication asking for payment to secure a job at the Nagpur plant should be treated as fraudulent. Large manufacturing announcements in India routinely attract fake recruitment agents who claim to represent the employer and charge fees for application forms or interview slots. The absence of official Nagpur postings on the careers portal means third-party job posts claiming to represent Mahindra Nagpur recruitment should be treated with caution.
For HR and payroll teams, the practical implications are longer term. A facility of this size will require payroll processing for a workforce spread across shifts, statutory compliance under Maharashtra’s labour laws, and coordination with local industrial training institutes and polytechnics if the skilling centre feeds directly into the plant’s hiring pipeline. The supplier park in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar adds another layer: supplier companies will do their own hiring, but their workforce will be tied to the same production schedule and will compete for similar skills in the Vidarbha labour market.
What the project means for Nagpur and Vidarbha
The Additional Butibori industrial area is part of MIDC’s industrial infrastructure in the Nagpur region. A land allocation of 1,500 acres for a single manufacturer is significant by any measure and positions the site as one of the larger automotive manufacturing campuses in Maharashtra. The state already hosts major automotive plants in Chakan and other industrial belts, but Vidarbha has historically lagged behind western Maharashtra in large-scale manufacturing investment.
The skilling centre planned for Nagpur is a notable detail for HR readers. It suggests Mahindra anticipates a gap between the skills available in the local labour market and those required for modern automotive manufacturing, particularly for EV powertrains and next-generation vehicle platforms. Companies that invest in pre-employment training typically do so because they expect to hire large numbers of freshers and ITI diploma holders rather than poaching experienced workers from other plants.
The timeline also matters. With production targeted for 2028, the next two years will be dominated by construction, equipment installation, and supplier onboarding. The hiring surge will come later, but the groundwork for that surge, including partnerships with local training institutions and the establishment of the skilling centre, will happen sooner.
