IIM Calcutta summer placements 2026: 475 students, 546 offers

IIM Calcutta has completed summer placements for the 63rd batch of its two-year MBA programme, with all 475 participating students securing offers. The process generated 546 offers from 156 companies, according to a report by Sreeradha Basu in ETHRWorld published on 28 October 2026.

The institute recorded its highest-ever average monthly stipend of Rs 1.93 lakh and a median monthly stipend of Rs 2 lakh. Consulting dominated the process with 220 offers, representing 40.29 percent of all offers made. Finance followed with 127 offers (23.26 percent), while general management and marketing accounted for 158 offers (28.94 percent). The institute also onboarded 51 first-time participating companies.

Why offers exceed the number of students

The gap between 475 students and 546 offers is a normal feature of Indian B-school placement processes and does not indicate a reporting error. In a cluster-based system, students may receive multiple offers across different clusters before accepting one. Some offers are declined, some students hold offers while awaiting results from preferred recruiters in later clusters, and some offers remain open as waitlists move.

For HR and payroll teams reading placement reports, this distinction matters. A company that extends an offer has not necessarily hired that intern. The conversion from summer internship offer to actual joining depends on the student accepting, completing the internship, and then receiving a pre-placement offer (PPO) for full-time employment after graduation.

What the stipend figures mean in Indian payroll terms

The reported average monthly stipend of Rs 1.93 lakh applies to a summer internship lasting roughly eight to ten weeks between the first and second year of the MBA. For payroll teams, stipends paid to interns are treated differently from salaries paid to employees under Indian tax law.

Stipends are generally taxable as income in the hands of the intern, but the treatment depends on whether the intern is classified as an employee or a trainee. Many companies pay internship stipends without deducting tax at source under Section 192, instead treating the amount as income from other sources. Employers should confirm the correct withholding position with their own tax advisers, as practice varies by company policy and the nature of the internship agreement.

The median stipend of Rs 2 lakh is higher than the average of Rs 1.93 lakh, which indicates that a larger number of offers cluster at or above the Rs 2 lakh mark, with some lower-stipend offers pulling the average down. This is consistent with consulting and finance roles typically offering the highest stipends in Indian B-school summer placements.

Sector concentration and what it signals for hiring teams

Consulting and finance together accounted for 347 of the 546 offers, or roughly 64 percent of the total. This concentration reflects the long-standing structure of IIM Calcutta’s placement process, where consulting and investment banking firms recruit in the earliest clusters.

The recruiter list reported by ETHRWorld includes McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company, Accenture Strategy, Kearney, Alvarez & Marsal and Roland Berger on the consulting side. Finance recruiters named include Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, HSBC, Jefferies, Moelis & Company, Rothschild & Co and UBS. General management and marketing recruiters include Hindustan Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, ITC, Aditya Birla Group, Airtel, Godrej and Tata Administrative Services. Technology and e-commerce firms named include Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Salesforce and American Express.

For HR teams at companies that did not feature in the top clusters, the data offers a benchmark. If a company is recruiting MBA interns from IIM Calcutta and offering stipends below the reported median, it may struggle to compete for candidates in the earlier clusters. The presence of 51 first-time recruiters suggests that newer companies are still finding room in the process, but likely in later clusters or for specific roles.

How this compares to previous IIM Calcutta seasons

The institute has reported its highest-ever average monthly stipend this year. While the ETHRWorld report does not provide a full historical table, the direction of travel is consistent with broader trends across older IIMs, where stipends have risen steadily as consulting and finance firms compete for a limited pool of candidates.

The batch size of 475 students is typical for IIM Calcutta’s two-year MBA programme. The fact that all 475 students secured at least one offer means the placement rate is effectively 100 percent, which is standard for the older IIMs but remains a significant outcome for prospective applicants evaluating the institute.

What HR and payroll teams should watch next

Summer placements are not the end of the hiring cycle. The internships themselves typically run from April to June, after which companies decide whether to extend pre-placement offers. PPO conversion rates are not included in the ETHRWorld report, but they are a critical metric for HR teams planning full-time campus hiring. A company that extends summer internship offers to IIM Calcutta students should have a structured internship programme, clear project scopes and a defined PPO evaluation process in place before the interns arrive.

For payroll teams, the practical steps include confirming the stipend payment schedule, deciding on tax withholding treatment, and ensuring that any joining bonus or relocation support for interns is documented separately from the monthly stipend. Companies hiring interns from IIM Calcutta should also be aware that many students will hold multiple offers and may decline a summer internship even after accepting it, particularly if a preferred consulting or finance firm makes a late offer.
